Wave Sailing - Sailing Instructions

  1. The first heat will start at ........................................ (typically 1200)
  2. The red and green flags when raised together indicate we will start in 10 minutes.  We will not wait for any sailor who is out sailing or who is not ready.
  3. The competition will be...................................................... (typcially single elimination) with man on man heats with two heats on at the same time.  That is four sailors on the water at any time.
  4. Well before the start of the heat the four sailors should present themselves to the beach marshal in the marshalling area and collect their streamer.
  5. Any competitor who sails in the competition area during a heat (not his own) will be disqualified.
  6. Heats will be.........................minutes (typically 10 minutes) long but may be varied depending on the conditions.
  7. Sailors shall have streamers attached (YELLOW high (mast head) and low (boom end) and BLUE high (mast head) and low (boom end).
  8.  The two BLUE streamers are competing against each other, as are the two YELLOW streamers.
  9. The heat starts with all four sailors on the inside of the break.  Any sailor who starts his heat out the back will not be scored until they come in, turn and head out.
  10. A flagpole will be used to signal the heats.
    1. RED flag means the heat is finished.
    2. GREEN flag means the heat is running.  If a wave is being ridden when the red flag is raised the whole wave ride will be scored.
    3. Should the RED flag be raised during a heat proceed IMMEDIATELY to the beach.
  11. We will sail off for 3rd and 4th as well as 1st and 2nd.
  12. We will not wait for sailors who are not ready for their heat.  It is sailors’ responsibility to know when their heat is on and to be ready on time.
  13. All wave rides and all jumps are recorded and then the best..................... (typically 3) of each are counted for the score.  We will only score two jumps from the same type.  For example, if someone does three forwards, only the best two will be counted.  If that’s all the jumps he did then he only scores two jumps.
  14. The wave score is multiplied by 5 and the jumps by 3 and then summed for the final score.
  15. Transitions are not scored.
  16. Jump gybes would be scored as a jump and transitions on the wave are included in the wave score.
  17. Jumps coming in over the back of a wave are scored as jumps.
  18. Jumps while riding on the wave face are scored as part of the wave ride.
  19. If the wind is very light we may exclude jumps but this would be decided prior to the start of the heat.
  20. Sailors coming in (starboard tack) have right of way over sailors going out (port tack).
  21. The first sailor on the wave or swell has right of way on that wave.  If sailors catch a wave simultaneously, the upwind sailor has right of way on that wave.
  22. Sailors committing a right of way violation which disadvantages another sailor will be penalised by removal of the score awarded during the violation and removal of their highest wave riding score in that heat.  All sailors including those with right of way shall avoid collisions at all times.

Divisions

The wave event divisions are generally based on ability (and sex). A few years ago we decided the old guys ripped so hard it wasn't worth having separate Masters fleets for them so you're now either Pro, Open, Weekend Warrior, Ladies or Juniors. We will base the divisions we run on the number of entrants and sometimes run Juniors or Ladies divisions within one of the others.

Elite

For the best sailors in the state who can do loops in any conditions and can get aerial off the lips when most of us normal folks are struggling to catch a wave.  This division regularly includes PWA sailors with previous event winners including, Scott McKercher, Peter Volwater, Ben Proffit, Jaeger Stone and Ben Severne.  You will need to be on your game to win at this level.

Open

The Open division is the next level.  If you are an accomplished wave sailor and you are landing loops an d aerials you should enter the Open division.

Weekend Warrior

This is division of everyone else be you a young up and comer finding your way in competition or a seasoned veteran who's body refuses to compete in Open any more.  The typcial Weekend Warrior dreams of looping and aerials but is generally still beuilding up the courage or crashing them regularly.

Ladies and Juniors (Under 19)

When we have sufficient numbers >4, we will run dedicated heats for Ladies and Juniors.
